Choosing the right mounts for your Harley-Davidson footpegs.

How to choose the right mount for your Harley-Davidson footpegs?

When it comes to choosing footpegs for their Harley-Davidson, some riders immediately know which mount they need. But for many others, the question is worth asking. And that's perfectly normal: between the different models and technical specificities, it's easy to get lost.

That's precisely why we're providing you with a simple and clear answer here.

The 3 main types of mounts

There are three main types of mounts for Harley-Davidson footpegs:

  • Softail M8 rider

  • Softail M8 passenger

  • "Male" mount (Sportster, Dyna, FXR…)

The Softail M8 rider mount

This mount only concerns Softail models equipped with the Milwaukee-Eight (M8) engine, meaning from 2018 onwards.

Its distinctive feature is easy to recognize: it has two "pins".
It's a mount designed for the rider, with a spring system that allows the footpeg to automatically return to the open position.

The Softail M8 passenger mount

Still on Softail M8 models, the passenger mount is different from the rider's - and for good reason.

Unlike rider footpegs, passenger footpegs must be able to remain in the closed position when not in use.

This mount is therefore designed differently:

  • It's the largest of the three

  • It has a hole on the side

  • This hole allows a ball to fit into it to lock the footpeg in the closed position

The “male” mount

This is the historical mount long used by Harley-Davidson on Sportster, Dyna, and FXR models (and sometimes on certain Touring models for the passenger).

Here, the logic is different:

  • The mount is the same for the rider and the passenger

  • There is no spring

  • Retention is achieved with a small metal pin

This pin is placed between the footpeg mount and the motorcycle mount, allowing the footpeg to be held in the closed position.

Visually, it is also the thinnest mount, with a nicely rounded shape.

What about other mounts?

There are other, more specific types of mounts, such as:

  • Touring floorboards with two anchor points

  • Certain specific models like the Fat Boy, which may have different original mounts

In summary

Choosing the right mount depends primarily on your Harley-Davidson model and your position (rider or passenger).
If in doubt, it's always best to check or ask for advice before ordering.
